International Pet Travel

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has launched a new website and compiled a fact sheet (pdf) dedicated to international pet travel and helping travelers and accredited veterinarians easily determine country-specific requirements.

Type of Pets

The site provides information about taking pets from the United States to other countries, as well as bringing pets into the United States, and applies to :

  • dogs
  • cats
  • birds
  • ferrets
  • rabbits
  • rodents
  • hedgehogs and tenrecs,
  • reptiles, and
  • amphibians

Information Available to Veterinarians and Pet Owners

  • The most current information available for a particular country. 
  • Country-specific health certificates and instructions for completing them, including clearly defined required fields.
  • Contact information for VS’ National Import Export Services offices located across the country, where experts are available to assist travelers and their accredited veterinarians over the phone and in person. 
  • Links to 0ther federal agencies that may require additional documentation upon returning to the U.S.
